5 reasons why you need those 5 minutes of solitude everyday

by Shivanand Sharma on November 24, 2008

Its much like as in the movie “The Transporter” where the main character liked his mornings quiet. 5 minutes of solitude can do wonders to your psyche, your mood, your thought process and your productivity. While the word solitude states loneliness, loneliness is not the only way to get solitude. The idea is to spend 5 minutes with yourself. No matter whether you are in a lift or a crowd. Just 5 minutes when you can set your mind free to fly.

“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinions; it is easy in solitude to live after your own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. It gives your mind the solace – You need healing beyond a good night’s sleep. Your mind needs a quiet and slow warm-up or call it a massage. 5 minutes of solitude replenish you mind with the energy all it needs to make it through the day.
  2. It makes you think – The mind gets numb when you are caught up in the everyday things. The cellphones ringing and the traffic and the sound of horns… the doorbell, the TV and the washing machine and all the hustle and bustle makes you deaf – you get used to it and never realize it happening. When you are alone and you have no one to talk to and there’s no one to talk to you, you start thinking. Mind by its very nature is very volatile. When it’s free to be, it generates thoughts. Good or bad it doesn’t matter. What matters is that your mind gains back the ability to think.
  3. To get in conversation with your inner self – The thought process is never a one way cycle. A thought builds up and then a counter or complementary thought builds up. You silently start thinking and talking to yourself. This is very important – it is important to connect to the person that you are within – the way you think, feel and speak to your self. All the bad feelings and malice inside gets washed away – that heated argument with the colleague or that lecture from the boss… it all fades away. You are your best “perfect” company and you need to be with yourself for a few minutes everyday.
  4. To detach yourself from time, place, circumstances – These are three things which bind you into being the person that you are. 5 minutes of solitude brings you out of the time, place and your circumstances. Its a big relief to feel elevated and see life and yourself beyond boundaries. If you are feeling homesick or troubled and confused, overwhelmed or delighted for that matter, a few minutes of solitude will help you be yourself.
  5. To strengthen the person you really are – These 5 minutes of solitude everyday will help you be the person you really are and want to be. Life is very distracting. Things happen which are out of our control. The circumstances control us and carry us away to act in ways we never wanted to. When you rise above the time, place and circumstance you’ll be able to make a better decision on how you want to act. It allows you to reason. You will make better choices for yourself and for all and be able to take control of your life.

Tomorrow we’ll see how we can spend these 5 minutes of solitude. Please leave a comment – your thoughts are welcome.
